Considering Purchasing An XB GT
Ford Falcon?
This list may help you confirm that the vehicle you are considering
to
purchase is a genuine XB GT Ford Falcon. For expert advice contact your
local GT club. There is also a GT register kept by a member of
the Falcon GT Club of Australia, listing VIN plates or destroyed
vehicles that have been listed for sale on various mediums. You can
contact them via a link in my LINKS section.
*GT Grill Badge fitted.
*GT twin headlight
grill.
*Painted bumpers unless option 04 – outback protection pack, bumpers then should have overrides.
*Hella spot lights (002.10 274)/factory wired loom green wires. Hella raised on glass lens.
*Wide radiator support
panel 71.5cm wide, double skin at
top for V8. "Caution" XC, no matter what engine
size
had double skin radiator support top.
*Check details on compliance plate/passenger side top of shock tower and engine block.
* Check that 'drip' is on either side of top of
shock tower and ID number not been removed from other vehicle and
welded into the shock tower from underneath.
Welded floor plates under
the footwells may indicate this.
*Contact Ford customer service and check that the options match the vehicle.
*Correct location of
blackout on sill/bonnet etc
*Check paint code/trim/trans/engine codes on plate. 9/73- 1/74 ADR 26 and post vehicles ADR 28.
*Check drivers side radiator support panel you may find the original metal tag wired to the panel. This tag will indicate the vehicle colour, tutone hood and was colour accents. It also listed 3 different police packs. Highway, country and standard patrol.*Check
inside boot and other areas to see if vehicle has been resprayed.
*Engine bay including battery tray and support should be same colour as vehicle.
*NASA bonnet scoops/bonnet locks.
*Pop out fuel cap.
*Twin Rectangle exhaust cut outs/rectangle exhaust ends.
*No chrome trim around boot/rear panel (check for weld marks)
*Factory twin exhaust hangers rear.
*Check for weld marks inside rear quarters-possible de badging.
*Chec
*Drivers side remote mirror standard.
*Rear radius (tramp)
rods factory locating point on rear chassis rails.
*9in twin
disc either 3.00 or 2.75, calipers on front of diff had long front pull
arms for park brake.
*Steel
spacers between leaf spring and shock plate.
*Seven
blade factory fan for vehicles fitted with air conditioning.
*Spot
welded sloping engine mount brackets.
*Fuel
line 3/8 or 9.5 OD.
*Motorcraft or Bosch
parts and NOT Autolite. Motorcraft distributor on
early XB manual with CK617 engine.
*Check
decals match year of engine and body, post 12/74 have pollution
control decals fitted.
*Post
12/74 vehicle will have battery warning decal fitted on firewall and
not on
shock tower.
*Check
LSD decal fitted on drivers side door arch below dome light switch.
*Check
top of wipe
*16M must be stamped on top of manual steering box.
*Dual horns (hi/low) fitted on passenger side engine bay, small size horn on top.
*Buckets seats, wood
grain sports console standard with smooth
silver/chrome plastic insert. No column shifts.
*Check
door trims early model will have plastic chrome strip. Both have carpet
on
bottom edge of door trims.
*Fold down centre arm rest on rear seat – standard.
*Must have factory
tinted windows with factory selectaire - standard.
*Check
rear windscreen for ‘Selectaire’ decal.
Dealer fitted Aircon will have ‘Selectair’ note no
‘e’.
*Check dates on front windscreen, date codes on windows use 'Armoured' word with a series of dots above and below the word.
*Check heater control panel with factory air, 3 speed fan. Heater tap for factory air fitted to firewall and is vacuum operated.
*3 vents in dash with factory air/no block off below ashtray.
* Factory power windows will have relay fitted to firewall above brake booster.
*Driving light switch standard, check correct loom wire (dark green) under dash.
*Clock – standard
*‘Four Wheel disc’ rubber pedal pad with steel insert.*Stereo
tape playe
*GT steering wheel – check date of wheel underneath.
*GT dash with 7000 rpm tacho and 140 mph or 240 kph speedo.
*GT front arm rests/GT door trims/padded glove box/glove box light.
*Trim/Paint to match ID plate.
*Only 1 vent control driver’s side.
*Dates on rear of steering wheel/door strike dates. Date stamp on steering column support and ignition barrel as per pictures below.

*Fuel Tank Breather pipe on early models.
*Rear Pillar Lights
– generally have the XA style lights.
*Correct
4 speed transmission for vehicle either Toploader for early models or
Borg-Warner
for late models.
*V8 transmission cross member.
*Driving Light relay located on radiator support panel behind battery.
*Correct Starter Motor Solenoid Location. Autos had remote solenoid and manuals had solenoid on top of starter.
*Rear door light switches & location.
*Check for correctly mounted Fuel cap surround.
* Boot light.
* Early model XBs were fitted with black plastic
vents in rear door wells.
*Post
12/74 fitted with pollution canister, washer bottle fitted behind
battery with pump attached to bottle, early
models, pump was part of
the wiper motor.
*Post
12/74 pollution pipes fitted to fuel tank.
*Brake
line to bracket on centre of diff and then to calipers.
*4 wheel disc brakes with distributor (bias valve) affixed to back of shock tower on drivers side and lines run towards the inner guard and then over the top of the booster.
* If you suspect an earlier XBGT has been wrecked and transformed into late model body here are a few things to look for;
date codes on various items under the dash, dogleg vents, removal of charcoal cannister studs, removal of washer bottle bracket behind battery, tank vents, lack of filler pipe vent, late model fuel cap, kph speedo, seat belt buckles, C panel lights.
